Alcon’s Pataday allergy eye drops are the latest eye care med to enlist a celebrity to help promote the product. This time, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver and Super Bowl LVI MVP, Cooper Kupp, joins the Pataday team.
Speaking to his own issues with itchy eyes due to allergies, which unfortunately coincide with spring training, Kupp said he uses the Pataday Once Daily Relief Extra Strength drops for 24-hour relief.
“In those weeks, when we’re outdoors working out, the pollen can really make my eyes itch and distract me from focusing on the small but crucial details of my work,” Kupp said in a press release.
Alcon’s media effort features a comprehensive campaign throughout the year with both organic and paid social content as well as collaborations with social media influencers.
According to the company, once a business unit of Big Pharma Novartis but now going solo, 66 million Americans suffer from eye allergies; however, only 9 million treat them with an OTC eye drop. The pharma hopes this push will let people know about Pataday as an option.
“Alcon is thrilled to welcome Cooper Kupp to the Pataday team as a consumer advocate for an important, but often overlooked, allergy patient need,” Harvey Brown Jr., senior director, dry eye and ocular health at Alcon, said in the release.
In February of 2020, the antihistamine Pataday received FDA approval to switch from requiring a prescription to being sold OTC. The med is credited as the first 24-hour eye allergy itch relief drop available in the U.S. without a prescription.
