Formulated Solutions inks deal to buy former Merck, Bayer manufacturing facility

Formulated Solutions, a Florida CDMO focused on consumer healthcare solutions, reached an agreement to purchase a former Merck & Co. and Bayer manufacturing facility in Cleveland, Tennessee, for an undisclosed sum.

Most recently, the updated 455,000-square-foot plant had been operated by Germany’s Beiersdorf Inc., which makes personal care products such as the Coppertone sun lotion brand. Beiersdorf in 2021 said it would shutter the facility by the summer of 2022.

The 60-acre, FDA-approved facility has seen a number of improvements in the past five years. Its expanded product capabilities include the blending of liquids, semi-solids and suspensions. Its packaging capabilities span flexible tubes, liquid-fill bottles and metered dose sprays, plus more, Formulated Solutions said in a Dec. 19 press release.

Bayer took over the facility as part of its $14.2 billion acquisition of Merck’s consumer care business in 2014. The plant also had a stint of ownership by Schering-Plough.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the facility employed 458 workers. Formulated Solutions didn’t disclose the number of workers it plans to employ at the site.
