CDMO trends reshaping biopharma manufacturing

The CDMO landscape is evolving rapidly as biopharma companies rethink manufacturing strategies, supply chains and innovation models. In this executive interview, Kevin Sharp of Samsung Biologics outlines the key forces reshaping the industry.

At the core is growing demand for stable, flexible and resilient supply chains capable of adapting to geopolitical shifts and emerging modalities. While capacity remains important, Sharp emphasizes that it is no longer the sole differentiator. Geographic diversification, expanded portfolios and new technologies are now critical to meeting client needs.

Innovation continues to accelerate, particularly in areas such as antibody-drug conjugates and next-generation therapies. At the same time, AI is emerging as a transformative force across development and manufacturing, enabling greater predictability and efficiency through tools such as digital twins and data-driven platforms. 

As part of Samsung Biologics’ continued efforts to foster next-generation technologies, Sharp also noted that the company is actively supporting emerging biotechnology companies through the Samsung Life Science Fund, which was established in collaboration with Samsung C&T and Samsung Bioepis. Alongside the direct funding, Samsung Biologics will establish an open innovation center — a biotech start-up program in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly) — to provide research infrastructure, mentorships, and broader industry networks, helping accelerate innovation and long-term growth.

Ultimately, Sharp highlights operational excellence — spanning quality, consistency and customer focus — as the defining factor for success. As multiple industry forces converge, companies that can adapt quickly while maintaining high standards will be best positioned to lead the next phase of biopharma innovation.
