Ian Read - Pfizer
Total Compensation: $25 million

Details: Read is a new face on this list, after former CEO Jeffrey Kindler's surprise resignation put him at the head of the pharma giant. That promotion brought with it a 44% pay increase, with Read's $1.7 million base salary, $3.5 million cash bonus, stock awards and benefits adding up to $25 million in 2011.

Under his stewardship, however brief, Pfizer ($PFE) has exceeded its financial goals, the company reported, and Read's vision for the future involves streamlining some of the company's operations. For starters, Read pledged to cut $1 billion from the company's budget, including $1.5 million from the company's R&D department, dropping 4,200 employees in the process. Earlier this year, Pfizer cut its severance package for workers, and the company is planning to sell its nutrition unit to Nestlé for a reported $9 billion.
