AZ has reset its environmental targets as part of a broader revision of its safety, health and environment program that runs from 2011 to 2015. One new goal is an absolute water use reduction of 25 percent compared with the 2010 baseline.

Some sites already have water conservation plans; the remainder of the big water users and those located in water-stressed areas will produce plans by the end of 2011.

As a maker of respiratory therapies delivered by propellant inhalers, AZ now uses hydrofluoroalkanes, which have no ozone depletion potential and a third of the global warming potential than the CFCs they replace.

As of a year ago, the company's green chemistry initiative had lowered solvent use, including a 60 percent drop in halogenated solvents over the past four years.

The company also is working with 30 of its API and intermediates suppliers to measure the environmental impact of their AZ-related activities. Measuring waste production and CO2 emissions marked the first step and water use was added this year. Third-party environmental metrics are not included in the AZ metrics.
