Kern Pharma and Indukern Group Choose Alfresco to Manage Corporate Records
CSC Installs Alfresco Enterprise to Answer Need for Generating e-CTD Format Electronic Records

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Alfresco Software, today announced that CSC has implemented Alfresco enterprise content management (ECM) system at Kern Pharma, a pharmaceutical company and its parent company the Indukern Group, one of the world's leading suppliers of pharmaceutical and veterinary raw materials. Alfresco Enterprise has been chosen for its high quality document and records management solution offered at a competitive cost and its capacity to handle all the necessary documentation processes Kern Pharma requires.

Although Kern Pharma and the Indukern Group already had a document management tool, it was not cost effective and was very difficult to use. The company needed to introduce a tool for the generation of electronic records while at the same time enable greater control over its documentation, which had been rapidly increasing in quantity.

Alfresco Enterprise was selected as it incorporated functionality, which offered an improvement to the daily processes of the records management users, as well as higher quality software and at a more competitive price than the alternatives.

Once the project, which was led by CSC, a partner and competence center for the pharmaceutical sector in Europe was implemented, the Alfresco document management system enabled Kern Pharma and Indukern Group to create records in the eCTD (electronic Common Technical Document) format, a legal requirement of the Spanish authorities.

Some key reasons Kern Pharma choose Alfresco Enterprise include:

  • User permission management for access to documents and files.
  • Automation of tasks such as the creation of files and record cards, based on templates which can be configured by the user.
  • Automatic management of document versions.
  • Creation of configurable workflows for document review and approval.
  • User alerts related to tasks pending.
  • Link between identical documents, with the aim of reducing storage space and facilitating there modification.
  • Interaction via workflows with different departments involved in document creation.

So far Alfresco Enterprise is successfully handling the growing volume of documentation at Kern Pharma while at the same time able to maintain its current structure, a function other alternatives couldn't manage. Tasks can also incorporate security elements such as document search functionality and role-based as well as individual user access control. Alfresco Enterprise has also already been integrated with the existing corporate intranet, permitting access by all departments to information held on the system in a controlled and secure manner.

"One of the most noteworthy advantages to using Alfresco Enterprise is having a document management tool, capable of absorbing all the document processes, not just in Kern Phrama but also in the Indukern Group," said Albert Almajano Serra, Information Systems Director of Kern Pharma. "Kern Pharma has always been involved with quality open source projects and Alfresco Enterprise allows our users to benefit from all its features without customization so in this way the project cost is always contained. So far we are very satisfied with the results of using Alfresco Enterprise and are currently considering extending the tool usage to include additional document processes."

The deployment of Alfresco forms part of the Kern Pharma's record creation process in the eCTD format, in accordance with a regulatory requirement and will be completed with the installation of an eCTD rendering system.
