Artis BioSolutions expands synthetic DNA, mRNA production with Spanish facility

Artis BioSolutions opened the doors to a new manufacturing center in Bilbao, Spain, that expanding the CDMO’s production capabilities for next-generation genetic medicines. 

The company's Genetic Medicines Center of Excellence equips Artis with end-to-end development and production services across synthetic DNA, mRNA drug substance, lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation and production services, the company said in an Aug. 26 release.

Financial details of the facility weren’t disclosed.

“The future of genetic medicines demands new innovations and integrated partners that can seamlessly support the advancement of new therapeutic targets from development through commercialization,” Brian Neel, Artis’ chief executive, said in a statement. “By combining synthetic DNA, mRNA, LNP technologies, and GMP manufacturing within one organization, we are creating a platform continuum that allows our customers to move faster, reduce complexity and cost, and accelerate the delivery of transformative therapies to patients around the world at record pace.”

The Bilbao facility was designed to meet the challenges of churning out genetic therapies that are becoming more sophisticated and involve DNA starting materials, RNA production, targeted delivery, formulation, analytics, and scalable drug product manufacturing, the company said.

Typically, the production of genetic medicines involves multiple vendors, resulting in complicated transfers, timelines and additional operational costs.

“The genetic medicines landscape has evolved rapidly, but development remains significantly fragmented,” Peter Stolba, Artis’ chief of business, said. “Our Genetic Medicines Center of Excellence challenges this paradigm by providing a single strategic partner from starting materials through commercialization.”

Artis, which is based in San Diego, launched as a CDMO in April 2025 after the acquisition for an undisclosed price of Landmark Bio.

As part of that deal, Artis picked up a 44,000-square-foot production site in Watertown, Massachusetts, that focuses on development and manufacturing of cell and gene therapies, as well as genome editing. The site also has fill-finish capabilities and produces viral vectors, mRNA and lipid nanoparticles.
