Are price caps contributing to drug shortages in India?

Indian pharmacies are reporting shortages of a number of drugs that are on the country's essential medications list and believe price caps are to blame. Being singled out are gout drug Zyloric, acid reflux treatment Ocid, calcium supplement CCM and thyroid medicine Etroxin, which the All India Chemists and Distributor's Federation says became hard to get after their prices were reduced to meet new government caps, the India Times reports. But when the newspaper asked GlaxoSmithKline ($GSK), one of the producers of Zyloric, about supplies, the company acknowledged it is having some manufacturing issues that could affect supplies for several months. "We are currently facing some issues across our manufacturing network that is impacting our ability to supply a number of products," the spokesperson said. "We are doing our utmost to bring supply back to normal as soon as possible." Story
