Pfizer pares down Ann Arbor campus
It's been a painful summer in Ann Arbor as Pfizer winds up its operations there. By fall, only 800 workers will remain at the Michigan campus; 2,100 were employed there in January before the company announced its sweeping restructuring. The pullout will be complete by the end of 2008. Pfizer offered other jobs to about 1,000 employees, 642 of whom accepted. For the rest, layoffs happen every two weeks, when as few as 11 or as many as 160 are told to pack up their things and collect their final paychecks. Meanwhile, more than 100 companies have expressed interest in the campus property, which boasts 25 buildings, including lab and office space. However, there are no firm offers yet.
