Obama considers CNN's Gupta for Surgeon General
Barack Obama has offered the Surgeon General position to CNN medical correspondent and neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta, reports the Washington Post. Although Gupta has not released a statement thus far, two anonymous sources for the post said they expect he will accept Obama's offer.
If he takes the position, Gupta will oversee the 6,000-member Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, as well as promote health and wellness. The 39-year-old Emory neurosurgeon is a media darling, which might make him a perfect candidate for the position. In addition to his position with CNN, he appears as a medical correspondent for CBS, writes for Time magazine and is also the associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He was also one of 15 White House fellows chosen as a special adviser to Hillary Clinton when she was First Lady.
