Letters show Nigeria OK'd Pfizer trial

Pfizer is back at the negotiating table with the Nigerian state of Kano in an attempt to finally settle claims about a meningitis drug trial the government contends was conducted illegally. The settlement talks are reconvening just as the state High Court ordered the feds to produce correspondence between the drugmaker and government officials about the Trovan study.

The letters could amount to Pfizer's smoking gun. According to a company statement, they show that the state and federal government approved the trial and authorized Pfizer doctors to treat patients as part of the study.

Last week, Pfizer offered $10 million to the alleged victims and said it would both upgrade the hospital where the drug trial took place and build a pediatrics ward in a public hospital, but the Kano government turned that offer down.
