Report: GSK to beat Pfizer by 2012

Tools

Who's No. 1 in Big Pharma? Well, in a few years it won't be Pfizer, according to a new industry report. URCH Publishing predicts that GlaxoSmithKline will overtake Pfizer as the world's largest by 2012. Pfizer won't even be able to hang onto second place, the report says; that will belong to Roche.

Currently, it's Pfizer in the lead with a market share of 6.2 percent. GSK comes in second with 5.4 percent, and Roche boasts a third-place 4.3 percent. That's all going to change, though, as only two of today's top 10 are expected to post industry-beating growth: Roche and Novartis. The global pharma market is poised for compound annual growth of 5.5 percent over the next four years, to $929 billion, the report states. Roche is expected to rack up 6.2 percent and Novartis 6.1 percent.

What about other big-name drugmakers? Johnson & Johnson and Merck are expected to generate only "stagnant growth" through 2012, URCH predicts.

The report's reasoning behind its sales projections is familiar: Future growth will be limited by increased generic competition, a lack of new blockbusters and high prescription co-pays for insured consumers.

This report coming in the midst of the Global financial turmoil is indeed interesting. It reveals a clear tilt towards European acendabcy in the Healthcare market ,as all the firms - GSK,Roche & Novartis - expected to dominate the Global market in the next few Years would be of European origion. However the lifeline for Big Pharma continues to be Biotech - and US still remains the Hub of innovation.

US is still the Hub of innovation but for how long? Scientists continue to be layoff right from left...and many Biotech companies are closing down b/c under this economic times, they can't sustain themselves...then, if BigPharma's scientists are removed and Biotech's lifeline is threatened...Where is innovation coming from? What type of innovation is BigPharma going to rely on?
Where is the quality gone!
All that will show up in BigPharma's pipeline...go figure that out...What has happened to the innovation model?

Why cant the beomoths Pfizer and the other bigpharm companies band together to fight big insurance who forces their clients to buy generics by raising deductables for name brand.Look many of my patients would buy name brand direct from the pharmacy company if their prices became more competative. People know that generic products can be a real joke and not work well compared to name brand. So get moving and do an advertising campaign against insurance companies saving huge amounts on your premiums by giving away junk generics for practically nothing. Afterall you only get what you pay for and people know that about other consumer products. Wouldn't you think meds would be a hi priority on their list.
