The U.K.'s chief medical officer is predicting that new vaccines will be available within five to 10 years that can protect hospital patients against deadly superbugs that kill thousands of people every year. And he believes that in the same time frame a vaccine will be approved that can help eradicate MRSA and clostridium difficile in the community, hospitals and nursing homes, breaking the chain of transmission. Sir Liam Donaldson reviewed a number of new vaccine technologies in the pipeline, including a new flu jab that would offer wider protection and needle-free deliver of vaccines for salmonella and E. coli. He called for a streamlined implementation process to make the new technologies readily available.
