Hovione set to expand its NJ facility and add new spray dryer

Portuguese contract manufacturer Hovione is expanding its facility in New Jersey to meet increased commercial capacity demands from customers as well as increase its global development.

The project at the East Windsor, NJ, facility will add 30,000 square feet to the existing facility and will include a new commercial spray-dryer unit to complement an existing unit, the company said in a press release. The new spray dryer will be specifically designed to handle potent drug substances (APIs).

The expansion will also more than double the facility's drug substance capacity and is expected to add about 60 new jobs to the current workforce. Ground-breaking is expected early next year with the completion of the project slated for early 2017.

"The additional capacity will give us more flexibility and make us more agile to deal with our customer's fast paced projects," Marco Gil, general manager of the facility, said in a statement.

In July, the company added a new large-scale spray-drying unit to its Loures facility in Portugal, which was also designed to handle high-potency APIs.
