Among its sustainability accomplishments, Bristol-Myers Squibb boasts the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Silver certification it received last year for its biologics manufacturing facility in Devens, MA. The associated lab and office building at the same facility achieved Gold status.

The project involved advanced energy modeling during the design stage, targeting an 11 percent savings over comparable buildings through high-efficiency windows, insulation and motors. Some 30 percent of the building materials were themselves recycled, and nearly 90 percent of construction and demolition waste was diverted from landfills for recycling. The plant is situated on a redeveloped brownfield site.

BMS is implementing a new set of environmental goals to run through 2015. Among them, a further 15 percent reduction in both total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and a water use reduction of 10 percent.
