Bayer - The 12 greenest companies in biopharma

Bayer

2009 figures

CO2-equiv emissions: 8.1M metric tons (8.66)
Water Intake/Use: Use: 1.11M cubic meters/day (1.2)
Hazardous waste: 375,000 metric tons (365)
Energy: 77.3 picojoules (82.8)

A particular environmental focus of Bayer has been fleet emissions. It launched the EcoFleet initiative in 2007, including incentives for using low-emission company vehicles. The vehicles use fuel-efficient engine technologies and drive systems, some based on natural gas and hybrid technologies.

Bayer also has set up teleconference rooms at some sites to cut down on travel.

And the company is working on air travel, too, by sponsoring Solar Impulse, an 11,600-solar-cell aircraft. The four-engine, single-seat plane, which achieves enough lift from its 208-foot wingspan to take off at only 40 miles per hour, just completed the first international solar-powered aircraft flight. The HB-SIA prototype took off in the morning from Payerne Air Base in Switzerland on May 13, 2011, and landed 13 hours later Brussels Zaventem Airport.
