4. Elanco - Top 10 animal health companies

2013 Revenue: $2.152 billion
HQ: Greenfield, IN

Last year, Elanco sat at fourth among the top 10, but as Eli Lilly ($LLY) CEO John Lechleiter pointed out in a call with analysts, it made two acquisition this year that it says will place it in the number two position in global revenue. In April it agreed to buy Novartis' ($NVS) animal health business for $5.4 billion. The unit has about $1.1 billion in annual sales. That followed its February announcement that it was buying privately held Lohmann Animal Health for an undisclosed amount. The German-based company is a specialist in poultry vaccines. Lilly has been making one or two small acquisitions a year to bulk up in this space, and it likes the growth it has seen, which at 6% last year was much better than the 2% revenue growth of the company as a whole. Better pricing and volume, particularly for companion animal products, were the key drivers. -- Eric Palmer (email | Twitter)
