Recall expert takes services to Europe

Recalls are an unwanted expense for drugmakers, and if extensive enough, they can be a drag on earnings. For Stericyle ($SRCL), which has a unit that helps companies manage recalls, they have been a moneymaker. Now the Lake Forest, IL-based company is taking that part of its business global. It says it has acquired Eclipse Marketing, a customer relationship management (CRM) marketing company with experience handling recalls in the U.K. and elsewhere in Europe. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Stericle's ExpertSOLUTIONS business handles U.S. recalls, providing services that include product retrieval, product warehousing and product destruction services that it says are "environmentally friendly." Now, Stericyle says it can handle those services for clients on a global basis. Recalls, of course, come in all different amounts, but sometimes they can be extensive. In June, Johnson & Johnson ($JNJ) recalled 32 million boxes of its Cilest birth-control pills because of solubility issues. Release | More
