Congress investigating compounding pharmacy trade group

Congress has begun an investigation into a compounding pharmacy trade group amid reports that it hindered FDA investigations last year, Pharmalot writes. The International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists is, of course, the same trade group that has provided political cover for compounders like New England Compounding Center (NECC). NECC is the oversized pharmacy compounder whose drug is linked to the meningitis outbreak that has killed 36 and infected more than 540. Congress is looking into allegations that date back to when KV Pharmaceutical asked the FDA to investigate ingredients used by compounding pharmacies to make the progesterone it sold as Makena. An email message seen by The New York Times shows that the trade group allegedly advised members not to distribute samples of the prescription drugs, which made it difficult for the FDA to complete its tests. Article
