The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s ‘Team in Training’ Program Now Offered to UnitedHealthcare Health Plan Customers

  • Team In Training endurance sports training program is now available as a UnitedHealthcare health & wellness offering
  • Program encourages plan participants to improve their health while helping raise funds for life-saving research

MINNETONKA, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UnitedHealthcare is partnering with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to encourage UnitedHealthcare plan participants to get fit while raising money to support blood cancer research and patient services.

UnitedHealthcare will now include as part of its commercial health & wellness portfolio LLS’s Team In Training (TNT), a comprehensive training program by certified coaches that helps people prepare for athletic challenges such as marathons, half-marathons, 100-mile bike rides, triathlons and hike adventures. In return, participants can find sponsors to support their athletic activities to raise funds for LLS’s important clinical research.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training program will enable our health plan customers to improve their health and well-being while helping others by fund raising for lifesaving cancer research,” said Forrest Burke, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Public Sector. “Combining a health and wellness program with a philanthropic aspect helps people in the communities we serve live healthier lives, which is our mission as a company.”

Someone dies from a blood cancer every 10 minutes, which is nearly 146 people every day. Also, leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.

To help find a cure and improve services to patients and their families, the TNT program has raised more than $1 billion since its inception in 1988 by helping more than 420,000 people prepare for endurance events.

TNT provides runners, walkers, cyclists and triathletes with a four- to five-month training program that includes certified coaching based on the participant’s level of fitness and experience; clinics for all aspects of training; the camaraderie of a supportive team; and fund-raising guidance. The program is designed to give both beginners and seasoned athletes the confidence and training they need to accomplish their goals. Participants can choose from a selection of endurance events around the country.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is thrilled to offer our Team In Training program to UnitedHealthcare’s 25 million plan participants,” said John Walter, LLS president and CEO. “With our amazing coaching staff, fabulous event destinations, support over four to five months of an entire team, and the opportunity to help fund lifesaving cancer research, UnitedHealthcare’s customers will soon be joining the chorus of those who say ‘TNT was a life-changing experience!’”

UnitedHealthcare employer customers and health plan participants interested in improving their fitness, adopting a healthier lifestyle, and making a difference in the lives of others can learn more or sign up to participate in an upcoming endurance event by contacting TNT at www.teamintraining.org/UHC or 1-800-482-TEAM.
