Abbott Awarded Brain Research Foundation's First Frederic A. Gibbs Discovery Award

CHICAGO, Nov. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Brain Research Foundation presented the Frederic A. Gibbs Discovery Award to Abbott, a global, broad-based health care company, for its dedication to advancing neuroscience through education, research and philanthropy.  The annual BRF award, named for one of its founders, was presented last night at the Foundation's Annual Discovery Dinner, and accepted by the Chairman and CEO of Abbott, Miles D. White.

"Abbott sustains a remarkable commitment to scientific research that benefits millions of people," Terre Sharma, Executive Director of the Brain Research Foundation, said.  "Through Miles White's leadership the company supports a massive effort that helps advance the understanding of many health problems, including brain-related health issues.  Abbott is especially deserving of this award."

The award is named for Dr. Gibbs, a neurologist who helped found the Brain Research Foundation in 1953.  He was a pioneer on the use of electroencephalography (EEG) for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.

"I am proud to accept this award presented to Abbott," said Miles White.  "Our more than 7,000 scientists are actively engaged in the pursuit of scientific discovery and innovation.  To be associated with a pioneer like Dr. Gibbs, and the Brain Research Foundation, a well respected organization that supports critical neurological research and education, is truly an honor."
