Huawei and BGI Sign Joint Development Agreement on Big Data Storage Systems for Genetic Research at HCC2015

Shanghai, China, September 18, 2015 – Huawei and Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) today signed Joint Development Agreement on Big Data Storage Systems for Genetic Research at HCC2015. The Agreement details how both parties will work together to achieve an over 30% improvement in the overall efficiency of genome sequencing research tasks. Huawei and BGI will jointly design and develop Big Data storage systems for application in genetic research, minimizing duplication of work. The signing ceremony was attended by Yang Shuang, CEO of BGI; Fang Lin, Vice Director of BGI Shenzhen; Zheng Yelai, President of Huawei IT Product Line; and Xiao Yi, General Manager of the Huawei Massive Storage Domain.

Speaking to the cooperation, Mr. Yang commented: We are committed to innovating genetic technologies to better the human community. Widening adoption of these technologies requires appliances able to break through the hurdles in efficiency and performance. As a typical Big Data application, genetic research covers everything from genome sequencing of biological samples to identification, prevention, and treatment of hereditary diseases. Without first-class storage systems, it would take a tremendous amount of time to process the extremely large data sets generated on a daily basis. Through joint efforts with Huawei in Big Data and cloud computing, we are able to quickly produce results from genetic research and expand the application of genetic technologies.

Mr. Zheng also commented on the collaboration, saying:We are honored and excited to be able to work with BGI, a leading global genomics center, in developing the Big Data, cloud computing, and other IT technologies required for this level of research into the life sciences. Through a process of technical innovation and advancement, we aim to quickly provide customers with genetic results and expand the adoption of genetic technologies.
