Show product flow in plant design plans

Consider layout and production flow simultaneously during facility design and renovation. Doing so will ultimately save design time and effort.

Interdependence precludes effectiveness when facility layout and production flow schemes are developed separately, according to pharmaceutical process validation expert Pat Smallwood of engineering consultancy SSI. She suggests depicting production flow routes on documentation to help regulators see the GMP implications.

Mapping out the routes traveled by both personnel and products--including exits for waste--should be part of the detail included. Flow refinements can reduce the likelihood of cross-contamination.
