Pharma, having laid off valuable employees, now finds itself short

Few weeks go by in which there is not a report of another pharmaceutical plant being cut back or closed. But in its drive to cut costs, pharma has shot itself in the foot by laying off thousands of experienced plant employees, as well as those in sales and other specialties. Now it finds itself coming up short, particularly in areas like regulatory specialists, to contend with new rules and regulations, says an analysis from consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers, FiercePharma reports. "Companies with decades-long legacies have lost their edge due to repeated layoffs," the report states, "wearing down the morale of scientific staff." The answer? Hire, PwC suggests. And provide better perks, including "soft" incentives like sabbaticals to keep from losing even more really good employees. Story | More
