India's Gujarat set to train food and drug inspectors in first state effort

India's Gujarat state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Underwriters Laboratories to train 60 food-and-drug inspectors to work under the Food and Drug Control Authority.

Gujarat is the first of several state FDA-type regulators UL expects to sign up for the training program to get the same skills as U.S. FDA inspectors. UL South Asia operates in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as well as India, and said it expects to add more trainees to the Gujarat program.

UL uses online programs to teach international regulatory guidelines covering drug quality and safety.
