Germany first in Europe to test database for defeating counterfeits

Germany is implementing a system that allows the authenticity of drugs to be checked at the pharmacy level to protect against counterfeits. PJ Online reports that the system will allow pharmacies to check labels against a central database that will tell them whether the drug is authentic. It is being developed by a consortium of drug manufacturers, wholesalers and parallel traders as well as pharmacists. The database is expected to be adopted by pharmacies throughout Europe. It comes as European regulators and law enforcement are trying to track down drugs stolen from Italian hospitals, diluted and sold into the legitimate supply chain in Europe. Story | More
