GlaxoSmithKline ($GSK) says that the people and products at its manufacturing site in Zebulon, NC, were never in peril from the bacteria for Legionnaires' disease detected this week in two cooling towers for the facility. Spokeswoman Jenni Ligday told FiercePharmaManufacturing that "The cooling towers are external units with no contact with product or employees. Our products are safe and effective when used as prescribed." The company closed and cleared the facility on Tuesday after routine testing turned up Legionella bacteria in the cooling towers. Because the cooling towers are required for climate control in the plant, manufacturing was halted while the towers were cleaned. Ligday said GSK expects to recall the 800 or so employees that work there and resume production sometime this weekend after the towers have been disinfected and proper manufacturing conditions restored.
