American Imaging Management Adds New Features to Patient Safety Program

CHICAGO, Dec. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- American Imaging Management, Inc. (AIM), a leading diagnostic imaging benefit management and technology company and operating subsidiary of WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP), announced today the addition of new features to its patient safety program. This enhancement has broad reach as AIM's health-plan clients include more than 35 million health-plan members.

In order to increase understanding of the appropriate uses of diagnostic imaging services, AIM has included the company's clinical guidelines in its Ask AIMEE Patient Exposure Advisor web application (an interactive tool that offers radiation exposure information for commonly ordered procedures). Consumers now can view AIM's clinical guidelines for specific diagnostic imaging procedures using the Ask AIMEE tool, accessed by the Patient Safety tab on AIM's website (www.americanimaging.net/safety).

"The key objective for any patient safety program should be to promote the appropriate use of services and procedures based on evidence-based medicine," said Dr. David J. Soffa, AIM's senior vice president for medical affairs. "Providing seamless access to our clinical guidelines offers transparency to help providers and consumers make informed decisions about the appropriate choices of diagnostic imaging services."

AIM's Patient Safety Program was launched in 2008 to help deliver accurate and relevant information about radiation exposure associated with certain diagnostic imaging procedures. The program includes a wide variety of educational tools including the Ask AIMEE Patient Exposure Advisor, podcasts, links to other educational websites and educational feedback for physicians whose patients may have received high doses of radiation from previous imaging studies.

AIM is a leader in providing innovative specialty benefit management solutions. AIM pioneered the integration of technology and clinical content for advanced imaging management through the introduction of web-based services in 2002. AIM also introduced the first set of web-enabled tools to promote quality and cost transparency in the selection of diagnostic imaging facilities. Most recently, the company launched new solutions to help increase the appropriateness of outpatient cardiac services and specialty pharmaceuticals.
