Recipharm International Environmental Award 2012 won by Dr. Damia Barcelo
Director of Catalan Institute for Water Research awarded accolade in recognition of environmental research to minimise impact of pharmaceutical residues
23rd of January 2013--Recipharm AB announces that the Recipharm International Environmental Award 2012 has been awarded to Dr. Damià Barceló, Director of the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) and research professor at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Studies (IDAEA).
The award is presented annually for the best environmental performance or environmental best practice and innovation by the pharmaceutical industry or the academic community . Since Recipharm was founded in 1995, its commitment to environmental best practice has been a pivotal corporate mission.
The award justification:
Dr. Damià Barceló's longstanding and highly recognised work has played a vital contribution in achieving a shift in the scientific community's focus towards tackling emerging pollutants as these chemicals are harmful to mankind due to their persistence and continuous introduction. Amongst Barceló's main contributions are method development for pollutants, endocrine disruptors and pharmaceutical compounds.
Commenting on winning the award, Dr. Damià Barcelóremarked: "I feel very honoured to receive such an accolade from within the pharmaceutical industry in recognition of research efforts devoted to first understanding and then minimising the impact of pharmaceutical residues on the environment".

About Damià Barceló
Dr. Damià Barceló has been Director of the Catalan Institute for Water research (ICRA) since May 2008. He is Research Professor and Deputy Director of the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Studies (IDAEA) run by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and was Visiting Professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during 2010 - 2011. He was awarded with the Spanish Prize King Jaime I on the Protection of Nature in 2007. In October 2012 he won the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water of Saudi Arabia (in the category of Water Management & Protection) for water science research aimed at understanding the effect of pharmaceuticals in both the water environment and the management of emerging contaminants. Since January 2012, he has been co-editor-in-chief of Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN), (Elsevier, Amsterdam, Netherlands).
